VS Code Extension
Context Zones
Tag precise Work Area and Reference ranges, then share a compact Objective, Status, and History packet with coding agents — without attaching whole files.
Pain
What breaks agent handoffs
- Whole-file dumpsAgents get entire files when only a few ranges actually matter.
- Scope creepWithout a stated boundary, agents edit files that were only meant as reference.
- Lost state between turnsObjective, current status, and past decisions live in scrollback, not somewhere the agent can re-read.
Gain
What Context Zones gives back
- Two editable zonesWork Area is editable, References are read-only — enforced by the shared packet.
- Native chat toolCompatible VS Code chat agents call
#contextZonesdirectly, with confirmation before any mutation. - Bounded historyDecisions, completed steps, and failed attempts persist in a ledger capped at 20 entries.

What's Inside
Five zones, one packet
A workspace-specific panel that stays out of the way until an agent — or you — needs it.
- Objective — the user-owned outcome
- Status — current state, next step, and blocker
- Work Area — selected ranges the agent may edit
- References — selected ranges for read-only guidance
- History — a bounded ledger of decisions and scope changes

How It Works
From selection to shared packet
No config files, no server — everything lives in the workspace and the editor UI.
01Select code, then right-click to add it to Work Area or References.
02Set the Objective and keep Status current as work progresses.
03Native chat agents call the Manage Context Zones tool directly, or copy the packet for any other coding extension.
04The agent edits inside Work Area, treats References as read-only, and appends History.
Give your agent a scope, not a scroll of files.
Install Context Zones from the VS Code Marketplace and tag your first Work Area.
